While retaining all the advantages of  the  AK family, 5.45 mm AKS-74U, AK-74M assault rifles acquired a number of new design features considerably improving combat and operational characteristics, such as a folding plastic butt stock, plastic forearm and hand guard eliminating hand burns in sustained firing, improved recoil compensator, night vision sight, etc. More rugged construction permits delivery of fire from the GP-30 Under barrel Grenade Launcher attached to the rifle.
