Mi-28NE, Combat Helicopter

Mi-28NE is a new generation combat helicopter is intended to perform combat missions round-the-clock in VFR and IFR conditions both autonomously (without target designation means) and in group (with autonomous target designation and distribution).
Mi-28NE is capable to engage:

  • ground targets without including armoured ones;
  • sheltered and unsheltered manpower;
  • various aerial targets.

Mi-28NE ensures:

  • low-level and extreme low-level terrain-following flights autonomously with the use of radar and thermal imaging system;
  • the use of armament systems providing destruction of various targets and in future performing fire in no target direct visibility conditions;
  • second crew member flight control, including training;
  • target determination and transfer of data to receiving posts and other helicopters;
  • built-in check and on-condition maintenance.

Due to its high power-to-weight ratio it can be operated in various areas including high lands and areas with high ambient temperatures. Mi-28NE can fly vertical accelerated manoeuvres from 0 ... 2.6 g-load, sideslip, fly backwards up to 100 km/h. It can perform manoeuvres, such as loop and pushover manoeuvres, etc.
The features enhancing combat survivability include:

  • shielding of vital components by less important ones;
  • main and tail rotors blades are made of super-strong composites free from secondary destruction effect;
  • duplicated hydraulic and control systems;
  • engine separation;
  • armoured pilot`s cockpit is fitted with ceramic armoured fuselage, bullet-proof windshields and armoured partition between crew members;
  • self-sealing polyurethane foam-filled fuel tanks;
  • unique fuel system operating in depression conditions preventing explosion, ignition and leakage.

Mi-28NE is fitted with rescue system (shock- absorbing landing gear and ejection seat providing crew safety during emergency landing at vertical speed up to 12.7 m/s). At the altitudes of more than 100 m the crew is equipped with parachute system.
Mi-28NE is equipped with two engines TV3-117VMA-SB3 with a new automatic control system to provide during firing restoring of engine operation mode during surge and combustion chamber failure. It permits to enhance employment envelope of unguided weapons to the limits of helicopter combat altitude and speed ranges.
The helicopter Mi-28NE can be airlifted by: Il-76, AN-22, AN-124 "Ruslan" aircraft. Time for helicopter preparation for flight after its unloading from transport aircraft does not exceed 1.5 hours.
Avionics

The new generation avionics of Mi-28NE helicopter is a 5th generation integrated airborne complex. If incorporates a number of subsystems:

  • high precision navigation (integrated inertial and global positioning systems as well as Earth physical fields navigation system);
  • stabilised surveillance and sighting operation`s system with optical, thermal and TV channels;
  • thermal pilot`s station with laser range finder;
  • mast mounted radar;
  • armament control system;
  • helmet -mounted target designation and indication system;
  • digital computer;
  • indication system with liquid crystal displays and multifunctional panels;
  • communications and automatic data transmission complex;
  • airborne defence complex;
  • on-line test system and training complex;
  • flight task preparation complex;
  • multiplex data exchange channels.

Avionics provides:

  • helicopter terrain-following flight upon data received from active and passive sensors. Airborne graphics station reproduces cartographic and terrain avoidance information, forms 3D images synthesis upon three sources of information: terrain map, radar, thermal pilot station;
  • search, detection (by day - 8 km and by night - 5 km), identification (by day - 7 km, by night - 4 km) of air and ground targets using optronic channels;
  • selection of armament type for target destruction and provision of modes application upon the information received from optronic channels and radar;
  • target determination and transmission of information to receiving posts and other helicopters;
  • detection of AD radars, launch and coordinates of attacking missiles, and guidance interdiction;
  • jamproof secured voice and code communication with receiving posts and other helicopters;
  • helicopter interaction in flight formation, target designation from leader to wingman, data exchange between helicopters;
  • transmission of data to the crew for decisionmaking.

Armament

The Mi-28NE main armament is the "Ataka-V" high-precision guided missile complex featuring anti-tank missile "Ataka" with supersonic speed, semi-automatic control system and 3 types of warheads:

  • tandem shape-charge warhead to engage armoured targets (including those equipped with explosive reactive armour);
  • high-explosive warhead to defeat lightly armoured and soft-skinned targets;
  • fragmentation warhead with proximity fuse to engage air targets.

The helicopter is equipped with "Igla-V" guided missile system with two band IR-homing warhead. Average speed of flight is 600 m/s. Air target kill probability- is 0.64 ... 0.83.
The helicopter is equipped with a turret-mounted 30-mm automatic gun, which has the following distinctive features:

  • large azimuth angle + 110 deg, elevation angle + 13 ... - 40 deg;
  • selective feeding ( the use of armour piercing or fragmentation projectiles);
  • 23-mm gun pod.

Mi-28NE helicopter is equipped with the following unguided armament:

  • 80-130-mm unguided missile units;
  • 23-mm gun pods.

Besides, for laying mines the helicopter is equipped with mine pods.
